Nobody likes being sick. Sitting in bed all day with a stuffy nose and congestion from a cold, a fever from the flu, or a sore throat to the point where someone has loss of voice is never fun.

People will take the usual precautions to prevent illness. They’ll wash their hands often, get available vaccines, keep their distance from those who are currently sick, and try their best to keep the house clean.

But there are some lesser-known water treatments that can help keep the home healthy: microfiltration and ultrafiltration of water. Now, microfiltration has a very small pore size to filter the water, but ultrafiltration has a size that is 10X smaller, which makes it an even more effective filtration method!

How “Ultra” Is Ultrafiltration?

ultra filtrationLet’s put these pore sizes into perspective for both microfiltration and ultrafiltration. The pore size in a microfiltration filter is 0.1 microns. For comparison, a red blood cell is about 5 microns in diameter, so the pore size of this filter is much smaller than the average red blood cell.

And an ultrafiltration filter is even smaller than that! The pore size of an ultrafiltration filter is only 0.01 microns, 10X smaller than the microfiltration filter. Therefore, this type of water filter can catch essentially everything that passes through it.

Ultrafiltration uses membrane technology to take nearly all suspended solids out of the water that passes through it including bacteria and viruses. Most living organisms, which make up various bacteria and viruses, are larger than 0.01 microns, so the filter can capture these organisms and keep them out of the home.

This includes viruses like Enteric, Hepatitis A Norovirus, and Rotavirus. All of these viruses can lead to symptoms like fatigue, muscle pain, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Based on these symptoms, most people would agree that avoiding these viruses is for the best, and ultrafiltration is a viable prevention solution.

How the Distillation Process Removes Bacteria

home bacteriaThe distillation process uses evaporation to purify any existing contamination of water. The water is heated until it turns to steam. The heat itself from boiling water can kill many viruses and bacteria.

Additionally, as the water heats and evaporates, the contaminants cannot be evaporated and are instead separated from the water and left behind. This process has been proven from the CDC to be highly effective in removing bacteria such as campylobacter, salmonella, shigella, and E. coli.

When consumed, these bacteria can cause symptoms such as headache, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, dehydration, and blood in the stool. All of these symptoms are awful to experience but can be prevented with a distillation system.

UV Water Treatment System

uv waterMany kids have experimented with UV rays and how effective they can be. They’ll take a plastic toy of some sort, set it on the sidewalk, hold a microscope over it, and wait for the sun to do its work in melting the plastic.

UV water treatments use UV light to target and penetrate harmful pathogens in the water and destroy bacterial and viral microorganisms that can negatively impact a person’s health. This method also attacks the genetic code or DNA of the microorganism to prevent it from reproducing.

Many homeowners prefer this method of water treatment because it is environmentally sustainable. It doesn’t add chemicals to the water or alter the water’s taste while remaining an effective solution to keep the home and those living in it healthy.

Of course, when choosing a water filtration system for your home, it’s always recommended to contact your local plumbing company. They can offer more insight and even test your water to determine what pollutants you may be dealing with already.
